Coach Camp

A place of practice

Why fit in when you can stand out?

In November 2022, I gave a talk titled “Youth Sports Out of Order” at The Glee Club Cardiff, a 300-seater comedy venue, that hosts Ignite Cardiff

Comedians regularly test their material in small venues as part of an iteration process – a way of quickly learning what does and doesn’t work. The event’s tagline “Enlighten us but make it quick” captures the ethos of comedians honing their material through trial and error, making it the perfect platform for people to try out their ideas.

Backstage, in the green room, the tension was almost unbearable. I had no idea how terrifying it would feel to stand up in front of people and talk about an idea that wasn’t fully formed. I wasn’t prepared, and I didn’t like that the slides changed every 15 seconds, so it went on.

Ignite taught me that thinking aloud and showing our workings out are a necessary part of the learning process. The audience at Ignite Cardiff had chosen to show up and listen; they already got the joke. By sharing what I was working on, I fitted in, but I also stood out.

If you are done fitting in and you want to stand out, then Coach Camp could be for you.

If you are a grassroots coach and would like to deepen your knowledge and expertise through peer-to-peer learning, don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what past participants have said:

“I liked the interaction and input from other people – the opportunity to share my views” Chris Powell

“Great group. Small. Comfortable. Simon, is great at chairing an “unconference”. I’ll come again – I really enjoyed it.” Simon Kilshaw
